Extra Credit Editorial Essay

Availible to all of my classes.

As a rule, I do not believe in extra credit. There are plenty of opportunities to make enough points to pass my classes and often I have extra credit on my tests and quizzes. In and effort to promote more non-fiction reading, writing and critical thinking I offer the following extra credit opportunity.

Write a letter to an editor in response to a current event, an article, an editorial or another letter to the editor. Attach a copy of this to your letter.
Use a standard typed business letter format: 12pt, Times New Roman, double spaced.
Write in the standard five paragraph essay format: Introduction with a thesis, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion that restates the thesis.

Turn this in prior to June 1st for an extra credit boost of up to 50 points.

I will then grade, edit and send it off to the newspaper of your choice.

If your paper is published I will double your extra credit, up to 100 points.

This may be used twice for a total 200 points for the forth quarter.
